Natural area rugs, so many options how do you know what’s best for you? Since the look, feel, value and the longevity of your rug depend a lot on what material your rug is made of you will want to know a little about each different kind. The most common types of natural materials include: bamboo, sisal, jute, seagrass, cotton, and wool.
I’m sure you are familiar with wool area rugs. Wool is the most common material used in area rugs, and is more of a standard material in which all other materials are measured against. Cotton is often used in combination with wool. It is softer than wool, however less durable and may wear out quicker than an all wool rug.
Two of the strongest natural fibers are sisal and bamboo. Sisal is made from the leaves of the ‘Agave Sisalana’ plant. And is known for being the most popular of the plant fibers due to the fact that sisal doesn’t cause static, and absorbs sound. Sisal can even be dyed, however they are often left undyed, and come in their natural tans and creams, or then can even be bleached for a whiter look. Like sisal, bamboo is a great choice for a high-traffic area due to its durability. Bamboo is one of the fastest growing plants, so supply is plentiful. So not only are they useful, but they are inexpensive too. Also like sisal, bamboo can be dyed, but is commonly chosen for its natural earth tones.
Jute is another natural rug material used. It is one of the least expensive natural area rugs you can find, and also one of the softest. Like sisal, jute is a neutral tan color, however it can also be bleached or dyed and then woven. Jute area rugs work well in areas with moderate traffic, however they are not recommended for areas with lots of moisture, and you should avoid steam cleaning, or wet shampooing your jute rug. Last but not least there’s seagrass, which is also an inexpensive choice that will last for years. Seagrass is grown in the paddy fields of china, and starts out with as a sage green tint that fades over time. It may also have a hay like scent that will also fade once laid out in your home. And since seagrass has a natural sheen, and is virtually stain resistant, and durable you can find a place for them anywhere in your home. Below is an example of a jute area rug by Surya.
